AlphaVPS

Bulgarian KVM VPS provider with AMD EPYC performance, generous resource allocations, and a hands-off approach that respects your software choices.

What Makes It FOSS-Friendly

AlphaVPS runs modern AMD EPYC hardware with KVM virtualization, giving you bare-metal-like performance without hypervisor-imposed restrictions. You can mount custom ISOs and install any OS that runs on KVM — including niche Linux distributions and BSD variants.

There are no Terms of Service clauses restricting what software you can run. They take a hands-off approach: you get the resources, you decide what to do with them. This is exactly what FOSS developers and self-hosters need.

Setup & Management

AlphaVPS provisions servers through the Virtualizor control panel. From there you can reinstall the OS, access a VNC console, manage power state, view bandwidth graphs, and mount a custom ISO for distributions that aren't in the template library. Provisioning is generally fast once payment clears.

Because the panel is Virtualizor rather than a cloud-native dashboard, automation is best handled at the OS level: bring your own configuration management (Ansible, cloud-init via the ISO install, or your own scripts). There is no managed backup product, so plan your own off-server backup strategy with Restic, Borg, or rsync to another node.

  • Virtualizor panel with VNC console
  • Custom ISO mounting for any KVM OS
  • OS reinstall and power management
  • Bring-your-own automation and backups

Caveats & Gotchas

AlphaVPS is a relatively small provider with two regions (Sofia and Amsterdam), so it lacks the geographic spread and redundancy options of larger hosts. If you need multi-region failover or a presence outside Europe, look elsewhere.

Virtualizor is functional but is not open source, and the dashboard is utilitarian rather than polished. Support is competent but you should set expectations appropriate to a budget EPYC provider rather than a 24/7 enterprise SLA. As always with smaller hosts, keep authoritative backups off the provider.
