Inception Hosting
No-nonsense UK hosting with KVM VPS across Europe. Straightforward pricing, zero software restrictions, and ISO mounting for custom OS installs.
What Makes It FOSS-Friendly
Inception Hosting provides full KVM virtualization with no software restrictions. They offer ISO mounting support, meaning you can install any Linux distribution or BSD variant that supports KVM — you're not limited to their template library.
Their terms of service are refreshingly straightforward: no clauses restricting "competing services," no prohibitions on specific software categories. As a UK-based provider, they operate under UK data protection law, which may be relevant for FOSS projects serving British or Commonwealth users.
Setup & Management
Servers are managed through the Virtualizor control panel, which gives you OS reinstall, a VNC console, power controls, bandwidth graphs, and custom ISO mounting. The template library covers the mainstream distributions (Ubuntu, Debian, Rocky, AlmaLinux, Fedora, Arch); for anything else, mount an ISO and install it yourself.
There is no cloud-native API or managed orchestration layer, so treat an Inception VPS as a plain Linux box: configure it with cloud-init at install time or with Ansible afterwards, and run your own backups (Restic or Borg to off-site storage) since there is no built-in managed backup product.
- Virtualizor panel with VNC console
- Custom ISO mounting for any KVM OS
- IPv6 on all plans
- Bring-your-own automation and backups
Caveats & Gotchas
Inception Hosting runs just three locations (Manchester, Netherlands, Germany), so geographic redundancy and non-European latency are limited. Entry-level plans use SSD rather than NVMe, which is fine for most workloads but worth noting if you need maximum I/O.
As a smaller, post-Brexit UK provider, it sits outside EU GDPR jurisdiction (UK data protection is broadly equivalent but legally distinct), and the Virtualizor UI is utilitarian rather than modern. Support is ticket-based; set expectations accordingly and keep authoritative backups off the provider.
